Community Internship: Down East Partnership for Children: Rocky Mount, NC
In order to further understand the partnerships in the community within which I serve, I completed an internship for the Down East Partnership for Children, an organization which is "Committed to Launching Every Child as a Healthy, Lifelong Learner by the End of the Third Grade." Along with my colleague, Leo Nieves, I was able to visit a number of site serving the community through the USDA's Summer Feeding program. At each location, we gathered information regarding their level of implementation of a joint summer learning program. We surveyed the needs and interest level of each location to determine next steps to improve the learning opportunities for students during the summer months. The experience of gathering information regarding the current state of summer learning programs provided me with valuable opportunities to learn about partnerships and network with community leaders.
